Serekunda West has yet again lifted another trophy after defeating rivals, Serekunda East in the final 62/57. The 8-team tournament, sponsored by telecom giants, Africell, was played over the course of four days.

The final was played at the KMC Part at the Traffic Light on Friday, June 16th. Although Basketball is not as passionately followed as football in The Gambia, the final did attract quite a very good number of fans.

The atmosphere was electric as fans eagerly filled the park, creating an energetic buzz that set the stage for an intense matchup. Both teams showcased their exceptional skills, delivering a highly competitive game that kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

The first quarter commenced with a fierce battle for control of the ball. SK West quickly asserted their dominance, exhibiting superb teamwork and precision passing. They took a very good lead by taking advantage of SK East sloppiness. Their star point guard, Adama Cham, orchestrated the offense brilliantly, consistently finding open teammates and driving to the basket with finesse. The first quarter ended with 18/10 points in favor of SK West.

The second quarter witnessed a remarkable comeback by SK East. They fought hard to reduce the deficit, and the score remained neck and neck, leaving fans in anticipation of an exhilarating second half.

The third quarter unfolded with renewed intensity as both teams fought tooth and nail to gain an advantage. The crowd erupted with each thunderous dunk, appreciating the sheer athleticism on display. But in the end, it was SK West who came on top.

Adama Cham of Sk East was the overall points scorer of the game. His prowess would not go unnoticed. He was presented with a D6000 cash for his exceptional skills. Abubakar Cham of SK East was the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.

SK West were awarded a giant trophy and a D50,000 cash prize. Runners up, East got D25,000 as compensation.

Speaking to journalist after the match, Alieu Nyang, Secretary General of the Gambia Basketball Association, says a partnership with Africell is what they have always been looking for. With the talent in this country, all these young players need is exposure. He hopes this is just the beginning of a bright future of Basketball in this country.

The SG also noted that the amount of media coverage of the tournament has probably never happened before, although efforts were made in the past to get such media attention.

“…even if 20% of that {the turnout and media coverage} continues with us to the league, they have definitely helped us boost the exposure of basketball in The Gambia,” a very excited Nyang says.
