In a gripping display of determination and resilience, the scorpions clinched their coveted spot in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), thanks to a jaw-dropping comeback led by super-sub, Muhammed Badamosi. The showdown against Congo on the final day of the AFCON qualifiers will be remembered as a defining moment for Gambian football.

Muhammed Badamosi emerged as the hero of the day, coming off the bench and orchestrating an astounding turnaround. Despite trailing by two goals, Badamosi played a pivotal role in securing a hard-fought 2-2 draw by contributing both an assist and a crucial goal in the final 10 minutes of the game. His exceptional performance not only secured Gambia’s spot in the AFCON but also left fans in absolute awe.

The match kicked off with a spirited Congo side that established a 2-0 lead by halftime, courtesy of a goal by Gaius Makouta in the 30th minute and a successful 45th-minute penalty converted by Silvere M’Boussy.

However, the scorpions displayed remarkable resilience in the second half, turning the tide of the match with goals from Yankuba Minteh in the 80th minute and the heroic Muhammed Badamosi, who struck just a minute into added time.

This nail-biting result secured a precious point for the scorpions, placing them second in Group G with 10 points. They are closely trailing the group leaders, Mali, who boast an impressive 15 points, while Congo remains in third place with 7 points. South Sudan finds themselves at the bottom of the group with a mere 3 points.

Gambia’s qualification for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is not merely a sporting achievement; it is a symbol of unyielding spirit and determination. Muhammed Badamosi’s heroic efforts, alongside his teammates, will be celebrated as a source of inspiration for generations to come, marking their second appearance in the prestigious tournament’s history after their memorable debut in 2021. It’s worth mentioning that this high-stakes match took place in Marrakech, despite the powerful earthquake that struck the city on Friday night, claiming the lives of more than 2,000 people and injuring hundreds more.
