Although enjoying most of the ball possession and shots, the young scorpions failed to get the job done in their round of 16 encounter after losing 1-0 against the South Americans.

Anderson Duarte’s second half strike was enough to secure a quarter-final spot for Uruguay, who faces the US.

A win for the young scorpions would have made them Gambia’s first U20 side to reach the quarter final of the world cup. But that did not happen, unfortunately.

The game produced two red cards, one for either side. Mansour Mbye was sent-off after just 17 minutes into play. The young scorpions had to play with a man down for over 30 minutes, before Luciano Rodriguez was also sent-off before the break.

Challenge that got Mansour Mbye sent-off

Lethal striker, Adama Bojang, had a game to forget as he was starved throughout the encounter. His dream of winning the golden boot crushed.

In his post-match reaction, Coach Abdoulie Bojang hopes his team would take this as a lesson and improve in their performance.

“It was a very good tournament for us…coming as underdogs, defeating the likes of France and Honduras, topping the table. Definitely it was a very good tournament for us”. Coach Bojang says.

Team Captain, Alagie Saine said they expected a tough game. He’s grateful that they got to participate in a competition The Gambia has not participated in almost two decades.
